Montevideo, city of 1.4 million people and capital of Uruguay, is a much-smaller version of Buenos
Aires and has its own distinct character. A slower pace of life dominates this city, which actually
has its own beaches, one of which, Playa Pocitos, is very popular for cooling off on hot summer
afternoons. Montevideo shares many cultural traditions with Buenos Aires, speaking the same
“Rioplatense” Spanish, enjoying similar cuisine (mostly based on beef), and sharing a common
musical legacy derived from the Tango and “musica folklore”.

Mercado del Puerto – Upon arrival at Montevideo’s port, your bilingual guide for the day will walk you
across the street for lunch on your own at this rustic, down-to-earth food hall filled with individual
stalls featuring sizzling steaks and other delicacies grilled over open fires.

Plaza Independencia, the square in the heart of the city, features a lovely plaza and monument to
General Artigas (Uruguay’s George Washington) and is overlooked by Palacio Salvo (Uruguay’s’ first
skyscraper). Continue on to Avenida 18 de Julio, the city’s main thoroughfare and shopping street.
Following this part of town, view the imposing Parliament Building, “La Carreta” monument to
Uruguay’s settlers and the 73,000-seat Estadio Centenario, site of the first World Cup of Soccer in
1930. El Cerro, site of Montevideo’s original military fortress, is a large hill overlooking the city and
affording a beautiful view of the surrounding settlement and open sea. Finish your comprehensive
tour with a visit to Punta Carretas Shopping Center where you can buy Uruguayan handicrafts and
leather goods.

Depart on your Day Trip to Punta del Este, South America’s finest summer resort. Stop en route in sea-
side Piriapolis, where your motorcoach will ascend Cerro San Antonio for a panoramic view of the
eastern Uruguayan coastline and nearby mountains. Continue eastwards to Punta Ballena for a much
closer view of the rugged waters as you approach Punta del Este.
Arrive in Maldonado, a colonial-era city about three miles inland from Punta del Este. Lunch prere-
served at a local restaurant off the traditional Spanish-style square graced by the town’s main cathe-
dral. Brief time to explore the square and immediate environs.
